STEP IN THE NAME OF LOVE

7min performance

by Pangea Kali Virga and Nico Hough

2017

Under St. Marks Theater, NYC

(as documented in the book Fundamental Independence of the Human Soul)

Step In The Name of Love is a 7 minute performance about intimacy, gender, and vulnerability through the act of dressing and undressing in public. Both the artist and their collaborator Nico Hough undress and redress in each other’s clothes while never breaking eye contact over the duration of the performance. This act of stripping to complete nudity and swapping outfits, undergarments and accessories challenges the audience's understanding of gendered clothing in fashion, and the fine line between sexuality, nudity, and fashion. Can more be revealed through dress than through nudity? What power can clothing alone have on perception of gender?
